A routing protocol determines how the routers communicate with each other in order to distribute information. This allows them to choose routes between any two nodes of a computer network.
Routers work as the "traffic directing" functions on the Internet. Routing algorithms determine the specific choice of route and adjust to changing conditions like disabling data lines and computers and route data around obstructions is what makes the Internet fault tolerance and high availability.
